Universal Design for Learning

We finished the stop animation project this Wednesday.  However, there are various ways to think about designing your class.  We have a guest speaker today to talk about Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  Hope you will feel this principle is very helpful for you in general and in your future classrooms!

Our guest speaker, YunJeong Eunice Chang, is a third-year doctoral student in Learning, Design, and Technology program at UGA.  She is originally from Korea, but has been to many places.  We feel so lucky to have her with us today. Now, I will just hand it over to her!

UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING

You have learned about and created learning tools. But, how can we use these tools for a group of students with diverse levels of achievement? Would it be ok to provide a “one size fits all” type of lesson or tool to your learners and let them fit into your teaching?

Thinking of your own learning, are you good at all subjects? Have you ever needed extra support from your teacher?

Today, we are going to think about the universal design principles for creating a learning environment for learners who have diverse needs. Then, we will discuss how to improve our stop animation projects.  For detail, visit https://sites.google.com/site/edit2000ud/.

PLAGIARISM, COPYRIGHT AND FAIR USE

The photo you take, the video you make, your e-portfolio and photoblog and now your stop animation project…all these things are like your babies.  You spend a lot of time and energy in, right?  Think about other products that we are using in our daily life now.  Do you respect the copyright?  Do you know anything about plagiarism?  How will you think if you find out others using your products or assignment without telling you?  Have you ever downloaded songs, movies or other media products illegally?  Do you buy the software?  Do you copy and paste texts from the websites to your papers?  There are so many things that can break the rules.

What is Plagiarism?

According to UGA’s “A Culture of Honesty“, plagiarism is defined as ”submission for academic advancement the words, ideas, opinions or theories of another that are not common knowledge, without appropriate attribution to that other person.” This is same as STEALING other’s property.

If you take other’s work (plagiarism), it is unethical (of course!) but also most times you end up breaking copyright law, which means it is illegal.

What is copyright law?

A form of protection to the authors of original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works” (US Copyright Office, 2012).

Creative Commons Images
Flikr is a good place to search for creative commons images.
Google Images also let you search for copyright free images.

Then, how would you cite a photo from the web? You need to provide the following information:

  • The creator/author
  • The title
  • The URL where the work is hosted (if available)
  • The type of license

Here are some more resources related to this topic.

A Fair(y) Use Tale: A witty video on YouTube that shows the extreme of fair use using Disney movies fairly.

Creative Commons: How to license your work and find resources that you can use with permission

Google Advance Image Search: Where you can find images to use with permission

Turnitin.com: Where you can find whether you break the rule of plagiarism

Plagiarism.net:  Similar to Turnitin, but free

With the advent of the Internet, people can easily access and copy others’ works without knowing if they are protected by copyright. However, most Web content is copyrighted. Thus, if you use the Web content without proper citation or attribution, you are committing plagiarism and violating the law. To use any copyrighted media such as images, music, and videos, you need to get a permission from the creator.

Teachers should be clearly aware of copyright so that they do not break the law when designing their class and looking for web resources for their class. Also, it is very IMPORTANT for teachers to teach students this as one of the 21st century skills. If you want to know more about copyright, you may want to read this article (only 2 pages and it should worth it!).

Why do you think these concerns are especially important in the 21st century?  Let’s watch the two videos.

STOP ANIMATION PROJECT

You have got the video in your YouTube channel and I have provided the guding questions already…so you just need to make it public!

Here are the guiding questions again:

  1. Which grade level?
  2. What is the subject?
  3. What is the Georgia Performance Standard that you are using to create this instructional video?
  4. How might this video help students to understand the concept?
  5. How are you going to evaluate the students’ understanding?
  6. What are the difficulties that you have encountered in this project?
  7. Do you like this project? Why or why not?
  8. Do you think this idea is good for students’ creativity development? Why or why not?
  9. How can we improve this project?
  10. What are the merits and pitfalls of this kind of project?

We all learned a lot of tools in the infomercial project.  I want you guys to try it!  Therefore, I give you a few choices.  You just need to choose one presentation tool and make a presentation including the stop animation you made and the answers to all the guiding questions.  However, I DO NOT want to see Q&A style.  Don’t give me bulletin points.  Make your thoughts alive!  This requires you to be creative!

Here are the choices of the presentation tools:

  1. Glogster  (most popular one among school library media specialist)
  2. Prezi (most popular among scholars and researchers)
  3. SlideRocket (quite popular among teachers)
  4. Empressr (popular from Google search)
  5. Google Presentation/ Google site (what you are already familiar with)

Thanks to Rachael, Ana, Kelly and Vanessa, we have their final product as an example.  Here is their Prezi.  But if you like, you can put the link to your video in the presentation.  In that way, your future readers can read your reflection and watch your video at the same time.  We will learn more when they present it this Friday!

COULD

  • Keep being creative!!
  • Think about a problem that needs to be solved in your life.

SHOULD

MUST

  • Get EVERYTHING ready for stop animation presentation this Friday and Monday. We will NOT have time to work on the project any more.
  • Complete commenting (type, record, video-record) on your American partner, Taiwanese partners’ self-intro.
  • Complete Week 1 Discussion (1220– optional) and week 3 discussion.

Stop Animation Work Day (LAST ONE)

How was your spring break?  Hope you all had fun and got some work done!

STOP ANIMATION PROJECT

Today is the LAST workday for your stop animation.  Some of you need to record your narration, others need to work on editing, and still others need to re-take pictures (sadly)…please let me know what you need and we will make you complete the task.

Most of you have completed editing.  So I will help you move to the next stage–  prepare for the presentation.

You have got the video in your YouTube channel and I have provided the guding questions already…so you just need to make it public!

Today we will keep working on making the set-up and taking the footage you need.  If your group is done with these two stages, we will move to the next one– film editing.

You can choose to use your own laptop or the one in the laptop cart.   One good thing is that the laptops here don’t delete your data when you log out.  Therefore, you don’t need to worry about losing your stuff.

Most of you responded to my survey expressed the interest in learning iMovie.  Therefore, I will talk about iMovie with the whole class.  If you prefer using Movie Maker or the App– MyStopAction, please let me know and I will teach you how to do it with you and your group members.

BEFORE SPRING BREAK

Finally, we are at this stage…

I need you to give me some suggestion to make this class better…so please submit the mid-semester evaluation.  Thanks!

1220 Mid-semester Evaluation

1325 Mid-semester Evaluation

As for the cross-cultural communication, there are several things that I need your help.

1220 Class

  1. You will know your partner this Friday…so come this Friday, we will let you know who your partner is.
  2. During spring break, if you can find a little bit time to read your partner’s self-introduction, that will be great!
  3. If you have already prepared the images to talk about sports, don’t forget that you have the choice to post it in VoiceThread and send me the link to earn your bonus points!
  4. After spring break, you need to comment on your partner’s 2nd week comments and also start the third week discussion post and comment.
  5. If you want/ like, you can start to think about the guiding questions for stop animation project.

1325 Class

  1. Please comment on your partner’s self-introduction.  (Some of you have already done that, and I believe that helps you know more about Taiwan and also your partner.)
  2. Please post and comment in the first week discussion thread.
  3. After spring break, you need to comment on your partner’s 2nd week comments and also start the third week discussion post and comment.
  4. If you want/ like, you can start to think about the guiding questions for stop animation project.

I know I owe you the grades…you will get them during spring break.  If you have any questions or concerns about your grades, just email me or talk to me after spring break.

I will send out emails about what you should prepare for projects after spring break before we meet on March 18 (Monday).  Before that, just enjoy your spring break!

Stop Animation Workday

Hope you all had a great weekend, even though it was so chilly!

CROSS_CULTURAL COMMUNICATION PROJECT

  • What do you think is the  most popular sport in Taiwan?  [provide at least one image with comment in VoiceThread. Use your own picture (preferred) or online image]
  • What sport in America is also popular in Taiwan?  [Based on your understanding about Taiwan, find at least one image to talk about this. Use your own picture (preferred) or online image]
  • What sport are you good at? (one image per sport. Use your own picture)

STOP ANIMATION PROJECT

Today is another workday for the stop animation project.  However, please pay attention to the following things:

  1. Make sure that you finish making all your set-up today if you didn’t finish it last Friday.
  2. If you are done with your set-up, you can start to take images today.  TAKE MORE THAN YOU NEED!  The more images you have, the more smooth the film will be!
  3. I will STRONGLY recommend that you use a digital camera to take pictures instead of a smartphone, because the resolution from a smartphone is usually low and will influence the quality of the film.
  4. I will also suggest that you use a tripod to keep the stability…However, this is not required.
  5. We will talk about how to edit all your images this Wednesday.  You will only have a little bit time to work on picture-taking.  Therefore, I hope you can finish it by Wednesday.

The following questions are the guiding questions for you to write the reflection on this project after you get it done.  You don’t need to think/ worry about it right now.  We will talk about it after spring break.  It is just for some people who like to think ahead!

COULD

  • Expect to know who your partner will be by the end of this week.
  • Expect your partner’s self-introduction next week.
  • Keep being creative!!

SHOULD

MUST

  • sports (03/04-03/06).  Find images about the popular sports in Taiwan/ what American sports can be popular in Taiwan/ and the sport you are good at.
  • Respond to your partner’s self-introduction and week 1 discussion by Sunday (March 10).
  • Finish your set-up/ image-taking by Wednesday.

Stop Animation Work Day

You guys have some really brilliant ideas!  Keep working on it.  I am looking forward to seeing all the creative and fun results!

Today we try to make your props, finish up your script, and organize whatever is needed for filming.  Some of you may not need a lot of set-up, but some of you may need a lot.  Just keep working on it and make sure that you can take pictures next Monday.

While you are working on the storyboard and the set-up for your stop animation, try to think about the following questions.  After you are done, you and your teammates need to create a Glogster about your stop animation to respond all the questions.

COULD

  • Expect to know who your partner will be by the end of this week.
  • Expect your partner’s self-introduction next week.
  • Keep being creative!!

SHOULD

  • Prepare for discussion 1– sports (03/04-03/06).  Find images about the popular sports in Taiwan/ what American sports can be popular in Taiwan/ and the sport you are good at.
  • Get camera and tripod.

MUST

  • Your reflection on the Horizon Report is due tonight!
  • Keep making your set-up, so you can take pictures next Monday.
