Creativity and Innovation Foundation

How was your Oscar weekend?  I was not following it online…but I am pretty happy that Ann Lee won the best director! Maybe you can talk about this with your Taiwanese partners on Facebook to see how people out of America view Oscar.

We will keep talking about the foundation about creativity and innovation today.  


Before we talk about creativity in today’s education, let’s learn from the researchers.  Dr. Bonnie Cramond at UGA is one o the leading professors and researchers in this field.  If you are interested in this field, you can check the Torrance Center at UGA.  Torrance Center help people to know whether they are creative or not and provide resources to teachers and parents to help creative children they have.

Sir Ken Robinson, a creativity expert from British, actually delivered a powerful talk in 2006 and indicated that schools kill creativity.  Let’s take a look at part of this video to see why he thinks that the school is killing creativity.

Four years later, he was invited to give another TED talk about creativity.  He has some great ideas that is very helpful for educators.  Now let’s listen to his talk.

Do you agree with him?  What impresses you the most?


Do you have any example about how your teachers encourage you to be creative?  What kind of things can you do to help students think creatively?  How can you boost students’ creativity?  There is a school in Hall County, GA is doing something special in their school.  The school is called DaVinci Academy.  This is really a dream school for both students and teachers.  No principal.  Only 10 teachers and 240 students.  They were having the museum exhibition about Africa and Egypt last spring semester.  Students do the research, set up the exhibition and explain everything to visitors all by themselves.  The students don’t have textbooks and the teachers create their own curriculum…this made parents a little bit concerned and worried in their first year.  However, the test scores from their students proved that they can still achieve the goals and all the standards.  They try hard to tell people that creativity, critical thinking, and high motivation…etc, can still be emphasized in the current education system.


A reminder of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) that address creativity and innovation:

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.


a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.
b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.
d. identify trends and forecast possibilities.


Creative Commons license was developed for those who want their works to be shared with others. This license allows content creators to opt out of some or entire copy rights and place their works in the public domain. There are six main licenses.

How to credit?

The stop animation project is very similar to digital storytelling.  What is a story?  A story has the introduction, the climax and the end.  So, what you need to know is storyboarding.  We talked a little bit about storyboarding when we worked on the infomercial project.  For the stop animation project, you need to think more about storyboarding, because you are going to have at least 100 images for this project.  To have a clear thinking flow about your story is very important!  But before we talked about storyboarding, let’s watch some examples from previous EDIT 2000 students.

Now it’s your turn!  Get into a group no more than 3.

First of all, you need to think about the topic that you want to talk about. It can be anything you and your partners are interested in!  We do figure out that better topics are ones that show cycles, systems, formulas, strategies, processes, etc., but it is not required.

Then think about the plots.  This is the stage when you need storyboard.  This website, kdmc, can give you some rough ideas about storyboarding.  Or the digital storytelling website hosted by University of Houston can also give you some ideas.

Don’t worry about how many images you need for now.  Just talk with your partners about the following things today and Wednesday:

  1. Come up with an idea for your video (make sure it matches a Georgia Performance Standard).
  2. Plan your storyboard.
  3.  Decide what props and equipment you’ll need.

You can keep working on these tasks on Wednesday.

Materials you need for this project:

1. at least one camera in each group (make sure the battery is not dead!)
2. a tripod (maybe)  (If you need, you can check it out from OIT on the second floor)
3. materials to make your set-up
4. your storyboard
5. skills in iMovie/ Movie Maker/ MyStopAction App

Then we can spend time taking pictures in class.  You probably want to find a quiet place to we will see how far we get and then we can decide when and where you want to record and when we can come back to the lab to edit the video.


  • Expect to know who your partner will be by the end of this week.
  • Expect your partner’s self-introduction next week.
  • Keep being creative!!


  • Prepare for discussion 1– sports (03/04-03/06).  Find images about the popular sports in Taiwan/ what American sports can be popular in Taiwan/ and the sport you are good at.
  • Think about a topic for the Stop Motion Project.  It’s better to be something sequential or story-based.


  • Work on your 6th reflection on communication by Wednesday (Feb. 27).
  • Read p.3-p.10 in Horizon Report.  You can find the document in our shared folder.  There are two versions.  If you are interested in knowing the tech trends in K-12 Education, choose to read that one.  If you are interested in knowing tech trends in higher education, like where you are, choose the other one.  The guiding questions have been posted here.  Please post your reflection by midnight on this Friday (March 1).
